Tale of the Chains

A tradition says St. Ignatius’ chains sparkled like silver as he prayed on his way to Rome around 108 CE. These were signs of his joy, linking him to Christ. One tale says Coptic and Syrian Orthodox believers share how, one night, as guards slept, Ignatius raised his bound hands, and the chains glowed, leading a prisoner to say, “Your God is real!” This story lives on in icons and hymns on 24 Kiahk, a reminder of faith that shines in darkness.

One tale says a Cairo teacher shared this story in 2021, and a shy boy sought Ignatius’ intercession for courage to read aloud, then spoke confidently. One Orthodox tale says a traveler sought intercession and found their way home. This story inspires children, showing that seeking Ignatius’ intercession can strengthen their courage. Like his steadfast faith, seeking his prayers encourages children to trust Christ in hard times. Guided by God’s grace, Ignatius’ witness inspires Coptic youth.
