Relic of His Heart

A Coptic tradition says that when St. Ignatius faced lions in Rome around 108 CE, his heart remained whole, a sign of his unbreakable love for Christ. His relics, said to include this heart, were kept in Antioch and later moved to Rome’s Basilica di San Clemente, drawing pilgrims to seek his intercession. On 24 Kiahk, Copts seek his prayers, and some tales speak of miracles through Christ’s grace.

One tale says a woman in Minya sought Ignatius’ intercession near a relic in 2017, and her son was healed of his fever. The relic signifies Ignatius’ love for Christ, inspiring all who seek his intercession. Children learn of his steadfast faith, like a shield, and feel braver seeking his prayers. Yet another tale says a Cairo boy in 2022 sought Ignatius’ intercession near a relic and then felt calm during a storm. Orthodox tradition links his faith to enduring courage. For children, this relic teaches that love for Christ, like Ignatius’ faith, endures, guiding them through his intercession. Guided by God’s grace, his witness inspires Coptic youth.
