On May 1, or 23 Miyazia, tradition says Ethiopia celebrates St. George with joyful feasts, especially in Addis Ababa and Lalibela. At St. George’s Cathedral, debtera cantors lead Ge'ez hymns, with drumming and dancing filling the air. Some say these feasts recall God’s victories, like at Adwa, through St. George’s intercession. In Lalibela, pilgrims process to Bet Giyorgis, carrying crosses and icons, offering incense and prayers for blessings.
These vibrant celebrations, rooted in Ethiopia’s love for St. George, honor him as a protector through Christ. His feast, a national and spiritual high point, includes shared meals and stories, inspiring Orthodox children to trust in God’s power through St. George’s prayers.
