Coptic Mulids

Tradition says each May 1, Copts celebrate St. George with mulids—joyful festivals honoring his martyrdom as his birth into heaven—at Lydda and Mit Damsis. Pilgrims gather, singing hymns, their voices rising as lamps glow in the night. At Lydda, prayers at St. George’s tomb honor his sacrifice. In Mit Damsis, some say tales of miracles, like healing through his relics, fill the air, thanks to God’s power through George’s intercession.

These gatherings, rooted in centuries of Coptic devotion, mix reverence with hope, with some saying even non-Christians join to honor St. George, drawn by his love for all. With processions of his icons, mulids show St. George’s nearness through Christ, inspiring Orthodox children to rejoice in his victory and seek his intercession.
