Legend says St. George once faced a fierce dragon, a story loved in Coptic and Ethiopian traditions, found in old books like The Golden Legend. Some say a town was terrorized by a beast that demanded human lives. St. George, a soldier of Christ, arrived with courage. Through his prayer and faith, God granted him victory, and he slew the dragon with a spear, freeing the people. Some say the town’s people were so thankful, they were baptized, learning about Christ.
In Ethiopian icons, St. George is shown as Satan’s vanquisher, the dragon a symbol of evil, as taught in Gəʿəz stories. Coptic hymns, sung on his feast day, praise his faith’s triumph. This tale, told during St. George’s feasts, shows his bravery and God’s power through his faith. For Orthodox children, it stirs hearts to trust in Christ, who defeats all evil.
