The Storm-Stopping Chant

Tradition says St. Yared once calmed a fierce Tigray storm with his Ezel chant, a tale that captivates children. Long ago, dark clouds roared over a village, flooding fields, but Yared stood by a church, singing Ezel’s mournful notes to seek Christ’s mercy. Tradition says the winds hushed, and sunshine broke through, through his intercession. Villagers rejoiced, calling it a miracle, and debteras still sing Ezel when storms loom, trusting Yared’s intercession.

This story inspires awe today. Some believe a cantor in Gojjam faced a rain-soaked feast but chanted Ezel like Yared, and the weather cleared, as if through Yared’s intercession, just in time for Timkat. Children love imagining Yared’s voice calming storms, and they hum his tones to feel brave in their own challenges. For Orthodox youth, this tale shows Yared’s chants are prayers that inspire faith and worship for Christ.
