Desert Life and Wonders

Walking on Water

The next year, Zosimas returned to the Jordan River with Communion—the Body and Blood of Christ—for Mary. She appeared on the other side, made the sign of the Cross, and stepped onto the water as if it were solid ground! Zosimas was amazed, watching her walk across, her hair faded from the desert sun. She received the Eucharist with tears, thanking God for peace, then walked back across the river. It was her last great miracle before she died—a holy goodbye.

In the Coptic Church, we don’t shy away from this miracle—it’s Mary revealing God’s power after years of desert struggles. Ethiopian children hear it too, picturing her crossing with holy confidence. Zosimas saw her like Christ walking on the sea, yet humble—a woman who had transformed her life. This moment inspires kids because it’s amazing and true: Mary’s faith made water her path to heaven.
