In Ethiopia, the rock-hewn church of Bet Giyorgis in Lalibela is a wonder of devotion to St. George. Carved from stone in the 12th century, it is shaped like a cross. Tradition says St. George himself guided its creation. Some say King Lalibela, inspired by a vision of the saint on horseback, built this church, its walls marked by hoofprints from God’s power.
On his feast day, tradition says May 1, pilgrims visit Bet Giyorgis, praying for healing and blessings through St. George’s intercession with God. This church shows Ethiopia’s love for St. George, their protector. Its stone walls stand as a sign of his intercession through Christ, inspiring Orthodox children to trust in God.
