Who Was St. George?

Family of Faith

St. George’s strength grew from a family devoted to Christ. Tradition says his father, Anastasius, a Christian of notable standing, perhaps a soldier or official, faced persecution for his faith. Some believe Anastasius was martyred when George was young, perhaps around 10, leaving a legacy of bravery. This loss inspired George to follow Christ with courage.

His mother, Theobaste, sometimes called Polychronia, raised George with deep faith. Tradition says as a wealthy widow, she moved to Lydda in Palestine, teaching him the Scriptures and the Church’s ways in a hostile empire. Some believe they once hid in a cave during a secret Christian gathering, escaping Roman soldiers as Theobaste sought God’s protection through prayer. Her wisdom shaped George’s unshakable love for God.

Some believe Theobaste passed away when George was about 20, leaving him an orphan but not alone. Her teachings and Anastasius’ example gave him spiritual strength. As a young man of means and military rank, George honored Christ above all. His family’s faith built a foundation for the trials he would face before the might of Rome.
