Coptic tradition says St. George’s journey ended on May 1, 307 AD, when Emperor Diocletian ordered his beheading. Some say Queen Alexandra, the emperor’s wife, heard George’s prayers and, through his witness, embraced Christ, later joining him in martyrdom. After enduring many torments, George was executed outside the city, and some say his body was left after execution. It is believed that 3700 people saw his faith, believed in Christ, and faced martyrdom with him.
His death was no defeat but a triumph, earning him the title “Prince of Martyrs.” Tradition says his body was wrapped in costly shrouds and laid in Lydda, where a church now stands. His martyrdom inspired countless souls, a legacy of courage and faith in Christ that continues to shine. Through his intercession, St. George remains a hero for the Church today.
