Virtues to Live By

Being Peaceful

St. Frumentius, known as Abba Salama, was known for his peace, like a calm lake after a storm. Arriving in Aksum as a slave, he served humbly, earning the title Abba Salama, Father of Peace. When opponents stirred trouble in the 350s, he remained steadfast, trusting in prayer, preserving Ethiopia’s faith. One story says he shared wise words to calm disputes at King Ezana’s court, fostering harmony. His peace was strong, like a rock nobody could shake.

This virtue shone in challenges. As a slave or bishop, Frumentius chose calm, trusting God to guide him. For Ethiopian children, he is their beloved father; for Coptic children, his missionary legacy brings peace. Some say a child in Aksum felt his peaceful influence ended disputes. His holy strength helped him share Christ’s light in Ethiopia without conflict.

Abba Salama’s peace inspires us. It turned discord into unity through God’s grace. Children can emulate his calm, staying calm when angry, seeking God’s peace through his prayers. His intercession makes Abba Salama a saint who guides Ethiopia’s faithful today.
