St. Anthony and Friends

Guiding Macarius

St. Anthony met a young monk named Macarius, who became a great monk, and guided him with wisdom. Late in life, Anthony shared his blessings with Macarius, and Coptic tradition says he gave him a monk’s tunic and his staff, like passing a holy light. Anthony foresaw Macarius leading many monks, and sure enough, Macarius built a big desert community in Scetis. A Coptic story tells how, when Macarius faced doubts early on, Anthony appeared in a dream, staff in hand, chasing demons away, giving him courage to keep going.

Anthony’s guidance helped shape the monk world, making Macarius a leader. Copts call it a holy handoff, with Anthony’s prayers still lifting Macarius’ legacy. For kids, it’s like a mentor movie: Anthony’s the wise coach, Macarius the young learner, working together to grow God’s desert family.
