Holy Places of Kyrillos

Church of Zeitoun

In Cairo’s Zeitoun district, a humble church named for Saint Mary became a beacon of wonder during Pope Kyrillos VI’s time as pope. From 1968 to 1971, thousands saw glowing lights and a figure of Saint Mary appearing above the church’s domes, shining like a star in the night sky. Pope Kyrillos blessed these events, calling them a sign of God’s love, and he prayed for all who came to witness. People of all faiths gathered, some reporting healings, like a man whose injured arm mended after praying there. One tale says a child saw Saint Mary in a vision, smiling with Kyrillos nearby, bringing peace to her worried heart. These apparitions lifted Egypt’s spirit during hard times, like a warm light in a storm.

Pope Kyrillos’ prayers, joined with Saint Mary’s intercession, made Zeitoun a holy place. He led services at the church, thanking God for this miracle. Copts believe Saint Mary appeared to strengthen faith, and Kyrillos’ calm leadership kept hearts focused on Christ. One story tells of a woman who prayed at Zeitoun for her sick brother, and, through God’s grace, he walked again. For kids, Zeitoun is like a glowing reminder: God sends signs through saints to say, “I’m with you!” The church still welcomes pilgrims, its domes a symbol of hope.

For young hearts, Zeitoun’s story is a gift. Kids can pray to Saint Mary and ask for Pope Kyrillos’ intercession, trusting God listens. The apparitions show that heaven is near, shining through Kyrillos’ faith and love for his people.
